Grading of Adventure Tours in India
Introductory
Involves trekking for up to five to six hours a day at a slow but
steady pace. These treks do not spend time at altitudes above 4000m and
are usually a week in duration. You will need a reasonable level of
fitness (remember there is no such thing as an easy trek).
* Suggested preparation: 30 minutes of aerobic type exercise, (either
cycling or jogging) three times a week for the three months leading up to
your trek. Hill walking with a daypack in variable weather conditions is
also recommended.
Introductory to Moderate
This trip grading involves a combination of what is defined as
INTRODUCTORY and MODERATE trekking – the emphasis being an introductory
trek with several moderate stages.
Moderate
Involves trekking for up to seven hours a day at a steady pace.
These treks may spend successive days at altitudes not generally exceeding
5,500m and are usually between 10 and 15 days in duration. You will need a
good level of fitness. Suggested preparation: 45 minutes of aerobic type
exercise, three to five times a week for the three months leading up to
your trek. Hill walking with a pack in variable weather conditions is also
recommended.
Moderate to Challenging
This trip grading involves a combination of what is defined as MODERATE
and CHALLENGING trekking - a moderate grade with challenging stages.
Challenging
Involves trekking on remote trails in variable weather conditions for up
to eight hours a day. This may include spending successive days at
altitudes not generally exceeding 5,500m. These treks may often be over
three weeks in duration. You will need an excellent level of fitness, be
prepared to carry a daypack weighing up to 8kgs and be completely
comfortable in adverse weather conditions. Suggested preparation: One hour
of aerobic type exercise, four to five times a week for three to six
months before your trek. Hill walking with a pack in variable weather
conditions is also recommended.

High seasons for trekking in the Himalaya are pre- and post-monsoon,
that is, from March through May and again from the end of September to the
end of November. Spring and autumn are also the prime times for most of
China.
Mongolia and the Tibetan Plateau are superb during their exhilarating
summer months from the beginning of June until mid-September.
The winter months from late October through March mark the best time to
visit Southeast Asia and all areas of India south of the Himalaya. How
about spending Christmas at Angkor Wat or the Taj Mahal?!
