India & Nepal for the
Softies Duration : Cities : Highlights : SUGGESTED PROGRAM : Day 1 – ARRIVE DELHI Arrive at Delhi airport late this evening. Welcome to India! You are met by our representative I the arrival area of the airport after you clear all immigration and customs formalities. Depart for Hotel for check-in. Day 2 – DELHI – JAIPUR After breakfast the rest of the morning is at leisure to recuperate from your long flight. At around 1 pm, begin your bus drive to the Pink City of Jaipur (we suggest you have an early lunch on your own if you want or grab a snack at one of the mid journey stops). The drive will take approximately 6 hrs during which you will have an opportunity to see India’s varied and lively countryside. Upon arriving in Jaipur check in at Hotel. Tonight you will join the group for dinner and overnight stay at Hotel. Day 3 – IN JAIPUR Known as the “Pink City”, Jaipur is the capital of the colorful state of Rajasthan. It has the distinction of being a well planned and laid out city. As you drive through the old part of town, you will witness a life most unlike others. Witness how the city blooms during the day in a kaleidoscope of color and sound. After breakfast depart the hotel at around 8 am for a half day excursion to Amber Fort. 11 kms from Jaipur, Amber Fort is a marvelous example of Rajput architecture with its terraces and ramparts reflected in the Maota Lake below. Go up the fort on the back of a gaily caparisoned elephant true to the style of the Maharaja’s of the past. The interiors of the fort have various royal halls decorated with intricate ivory, mirror and glass work complemented by exquisite wall paintings. As you move between the rooms of this magnificent structure feel the history and visualize the pomp and grandeur of a kingdom never conquered. After your tour return to the hotel or a city restaurant where you can relax or enjoy a lunch on your own. At around 2 pm venture back into the city, this time on a city tour. This afternoon you will visit the City palace Museum where you can see an imposing blend of traditional Rajasthani and Mughal Art. The museum is resplendent with its collection of robes of royal princess, carpets, an armoury of old weapons, miniature paintings portraying court scenes, battle scenes and processions. Also visit the awe inspiring Jantar Mantar (an accurate observatory built in 1726 AD). Also included is a photo visit at the Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds) – a five storied wonder with a spectacular pyramidal façade and overhanging windows with latticed screens, domes and spires. After the tour return to the hotel where rest of the day is for you to do as you please. Dinner is on your own. This evening you may also enjoy one of our optional activities. Day 4 – JAIPUR – AGRA After breakfast leave the hotel at around 8 am for Agra, a drive taking approximately five and a half hrs. On the way you will visit Fatehpur Sikri – the deserted red sandstone city that was built by Emperor Akbar as his capital. Ponder the mysterious desertion of this capital city that was dramatically abandoned a few years after it was built. It was a veritable fairy tale city and its ‘ruins’ are still I a pristine condition. It is not hard to imagine what the court life must have been like in the days of its grandeur. Upon arrival in Agra check in at Hotel. Late afternoon pay your first visit to the magnificent monument to love – the Taj Mahal. Your tonight’s dinner is at the hotel with the group. Day 5 – IN AGRA At the time of the Mughals, in the 16th & 17th centuries, Agra was the capital of the grand Mughal Empire. During this period the city became a leading centre of art, science, commerce and culture. Take an optional sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal (you must leave the hotel at around 0540. Gates to the Taj open at 0600 return to the hotel around 0715). Witness the Taj glow in the changing light of the rising sun. This morning after breakfast leave the hotel at around 9 am for a tour of Agra City beginning with a visit to Taj Mahal which is perhaps the most perfect architectural monument in the World. You are left in awe as you gaze at this monument of eternal love and a symbol to Indian ingenuity. Then proceed on to Agra’s impressive Agra Fort where you are taken through the chambers of this royal residence. As you drive through the city witness the local life and bazaars (markets) and the hustle bustle of everyday India. Afternoon free for independent activities or to take one of the available optional tours. Day 6 – AGRA – VARANASI Morning after breakfast transfer to airport to board flight for Varanasi. On your arrival at Varanasi you are met and transferred to your hotel Taj Ganges for check-in. Varanasi is the religious centre of Hindu religion. Situated on the banks of the holy river Ganges, Varanasi is considered to be among the oldest living cities of the world and has been a centre of learning and civilization for centuries. Varanasi holds special significance in the lives of the Indian people. Every year hundreds of thousands of pilgrims make a long journey to this vibrant city where you can find the richest of the rich living side by side with the poorest of the poor. Travel to Varanasi with an open mind and see what faith can do to people and what their devotion to god leads to achieve. Look beyond the poverty into the eyes of the people and you will see a sense of enlightenment and peace that their belief in a god has given them. Varanasi is an unique city that vibrates with cosmic forces beyond comprehension. Afternoon proceed for half day excursion to Sarnath which is around 10 kms, from the centre of the city. Sarnath symbolizes the birth of Buddhism. It was here that Buddha revealed his doctrine and founded his monastic community. The museum at Sarnath is amongst the most important in India and contains carvings representing a whole range of styles – archaic, the Mathura School, Gupta, past Gupta and Medieval – covering work of sculptors from the 3rd century BC to the 12th century AD. Also seen here is the original lions heads from the Asoka Pillar, which form the symbol of the Indian republic. This evening take a special visit to the Ganges. Take a boat ride in the evening and witness the Aarti ceremony that takes place every evening in worship to the might rivers and Gods that protect all. See Varanasi come alive along the banks of the river. See people worshiping. Witness the conclusion of life at the river bank holy cremation grounds. It is believed if you die in Varanasi you go straight to heaven. Varanasi will be one of the most extraordinary experiences of your visit to India. Return to your hotel for a group dinner. Day 7 – VARANASI – KATHMANDU Early morning after breakfast drive for Bhairawa (India & Nepal border approximate six to seven hours drive) to connect your flight, depart fom Bhairawa for athmandu. Upon arrival in Kathmandu transfer to Hotel for check-in. Nepal – the Hindu Kingdom, is a mystical country nestled I the folds of the magnificent Himalaya mountain ranges. The people of Nepal can always be seen to be smiling. Nepal is a deeply religious country as you will see in their temples and buildings. The nepalse culture is very diverse form India at the same time is also very similar in many aspects. Tonight’s dinner will be at your hotel. Day 8 – KATHMANDU – TEMPLE TIGER Morning after breakfast begins your five hour drive to the Royal Chitwan National Park where you will stay at the famed Temple Tiger Jungle Lodge. Your journey will take a number of forms of transportation which will make the trip an exciting one. Your lodge hosts will greet you and teach you the ways of the jungle. In the evening will venture into the wild for the first time on the back of an elephant or by jeep. This will be first chance to spot a Tiger if you are lucky. In the evening enjoy a nature slide show. All your meals during your stay at Temple Tiger are included with the group. Lunch and dinner at the Lodge. Day 9 – IN TEMPLE TIGER Early morning revisit the jungle in hunt of the ever elusive Tiger. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore the area on your own or take a nature walk with any of the professional lodge naturalists. Eel free to ask them questions of the animals and plants of the jungle. These young men and women have a passion for nature and are only to happy to be of assistance. In the evening another foray into the jungle is planned. All meals at the Lodge. Day 10 – TEMPLE TIGER – KATHMANDU Once last visit to the jungle. After breakfast its timeto drive back to Kathmandu and to the madness of modern man. Your lunch has been arranged on the way. Upon arrival in Kathmandu check in at hotel. Later proceed on a tour of Kathmandu City – the unique and fascinating capital of Nepal. Drive to the central Durbar Square Hanuman Dhoka, the ancient royal residential quarter, see the Mahadev & Parvati Temple, House of the Goddess Kumari – the house of the vestal virgin or the living Goddess. Walk around the local bazaars. Also visit the ancient city of Patan, known as the ‘City of Grace and Fine Arts’ where you will witness interesting and beautiful places of art and architecture. Day 11 – KATHMANDU – DELHI Morning after breakfast proceed on a tour of ancient city of Bhadgaon, the holy temple of Pashupatinath and the Bodhnath Stupa. Bhadgaon was an ancient capital of Nepal. Also known as Bhaktapur it is the home of medieval art & architecture. The main square contains innumerable temples and other architectural showpieces such as the Lion Gate, the palace of 55 Windows, the Batsala and Nyatpola temples. Also visit Bodhnath, a colossal stupa, one of the largest in the world, It is generally acknowledged to be one of the most important Tibetan Buddhist monuments outside Tibet. Pay an outside visit to one of the holiest Hindu shrines in the world – Pashupatinath Temple (non Hindus are not allowed inside). This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Situated on the bank of the river Bagmati, it is a pagoda style temple with a gilt roof and richly carved doors. Evening transfer to airport where you will board flight for Delhi. Arrive Delhi and transfer to Hotel. Day 12 – IN DELHI Morning after breakfast leave the hotel for a full day city tour of Old & New Delhi. Delhi stands as the capital of Modern India. Here you can see the mingling of the Old and New India, the ancient and the modern. New Delhi was designed and built by the British in the 1920’s- it’s a city of wide boulevards impressive Government buildings, green parks and gardens. You will visit two monuments from Delhi’s past – Humayun’s Tomb and Qutub Minar. Your drive takes you along the ceremonial avenue, Rajghat, past the imposing India Gate and Parliament House. Also visit a local temple. Old Delhi was an ancient walled city. Here you will see Red Fort, the most apulent Fort and Palace of the Mughal Empire; Raj Ghat, the memorial site of the Mahatma Gandhi; Jama Masjid, th largest mosque in India and Chandni Chowk was the commercial centre of Delhi in the old time and you will see it come alive in the morning as the trading day starts. This evening is free for independent activities or to enjoy one of the optional activities available to you. Day 13 – LEAVE DELHI Its time for your magicaljourney to come to an end. This morning you will transfer to the airport where you will board your international flight back home.
